  • This method provides a permanent solution rather than the temporary methods listed above

  • Recommended if you need Windows Defender to stay disabled

Temporary solution

Windows Defender, the built-in antivirus on Windows, can often interfere with the installation of new programs. Follow these steps to temporarily disable it:

  1. Open Windows Security Settings:

    • Click on the Start menu and select Settings

    • Navigate to Update & Security > Windows Security

  2. Access Virus & Threat Protection:

    • Click on Virus & threat protection

  3. Manage Settings:

    • Under the Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings

  4. Turn Off Real-time Protection:

    • Toggle off Real-time protection. Note that Windows Defender will automatically turn itself back on after a short while.

Disabling Third-Party Antivirus Software

The process for disabling third-party antivirus software varies by the program. Below are general steps that apply to many antivirus tools:

  1. Open Your Antivirus Application:

    • Locate the antivirus icon on your taskbar or desktop and open the application

  2. Find the Real-time Protection Settings:

    • Look for a section labeled Real-time Protection, Resident Shield, On-access Scanning, or similar

  3. Disable Real-time Protection:

    • There should be an option to disable or pause real-time protection. Select this option. Some programs may ask for a duration for how long you wish to disable the protection.
